The Postbaccalaureate Prehealth Professions Program through the University College Community, New Brunswick, is designed for college graduates who wish to acquire an education in the health professions and who need to take some or all of the basic science courses required for admission to medical and other health professions schools. A certificate option of the program is available to students who meet an initial minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 and a non-certificate option is open to all eligible students. The program also serves students who need to improve their grade point averages to enhance their applications to these schools.

Application Forms & Schedules:
Program Objectives:
- Provide opportunity and support for Postbaccalaureate students to prepare for application to medical/health professions schools.
- Offer full access to the services of the Health Professions Office (HPO) and to all undergraduate courses and services normally available to undergraduate students at Rutgers. Students will pay program fees and other fees required of all undergraduate students at Rutgers-NB.
- Support the development of a broad range of co-curricular/extra-curricular programs and support services such as supplemental instruction, seminar in medical and health issues, peer support network, workshops and other events to inform students about the admission process and current issues in the health professions.
- Sponsor a Medical College/Dental Admission Test (MCAT/DAT) Preparation and Workshop.
- Award a Postbaccalaureate Prehealth Professions Studies Certificate upon completion of the requirements for the program.
The Curriculum:
Required Core Courses: One year of college work in:
- English
- Mathematics beyond Pre-Calculus
- General Physics and laboratory
- General Chemistry and laboratory
- Organic Chemistry and laboratory
- General Biology and laboratory
Recommended Advanced Courses: Any two courses in:
- Introductory Biochemistry
- Genetics
- Physiology
- Microbiology
Liberal Arts/Electives: Recommended to broaden scope:
- Classics 101 (e.g., Word Power)
- Philosophy (e.g., Medical Ethics)
- Sociology (e.g., Sociology of Medicine and Healthcare)
- Psychology (e.g., Health Psychology)
- Internships in the Health Professions
- Special Topics on Medical & Health Issues Seminar
Program Requirements:
Certificate Option: (Requires an initial GPA of 3.0)
Students choosing this option must:
- maintain a minimum GPA of 3.4 in the program.
- maintain a file in the HPO.
- take the Medical College Admission Test with a minimum combined score of 28.
- complete at least 24 credits at Rutgers, including the Capstone Seminar Course in Medical and Health Issues.
Non-Certificate Option: All students must complete the required courses and maintain a file in the HPO.
Schedule:
The average time for completing the core courses required for application to health professions schools is two years.
Tuition & Fees:
For the 2006/2007 academic year, the tuition per credit hour (subject to change) is as follows:
- part-time, New Jersey residents – $255.40
- part-time, non-residents – $532.50
Supplemental Fees:
Optional fees will be assessed as follows:
- CAPSTONE SEMINAR COURSE: $150.00 – A ten-week non-credit seminar course on: Special Topics in Medical and Health Issues
- ORGANIC CHEMISTRY REVIEW: $250.00 – Supplemental instruction in organic chemistry (307-308); provides co-curricular support through weekly reviews of topics normally covered in the course. May be taken as a refresher course. Ten weeks each semester
- MCAT/DAT REVIEW COURSE: $650.00 – Intensive preparation for the MCAT/DAT

This program offers an intensive eight-week test preparation combined with instruction and advising on all aspects of medical/dental school admission process.

Program Requirements:
Open to all pre-medical/pre-dental students who have completed one year of college work in General and Organic Chemistry, General Biology, and General Physics.
Program Schedule:
- TWTH 6:15 PM – 9:15 PM
- Spring 2001: February 6 - April 1
- Summer 2001: June 5 - July 31

Admissions Requirements:
- Baccalaureate Degree in any field from an accredited institution.
- Official Transcripts of all college work.
- A Written Autobiographical Statement. State reasons for applying to the program.
- Interview with an advisor at Rutgers.
- Admission is on a rolling basis.
HOW TO APPLY FOR ADMISSION:
A. YOUR COMPLETE APPLICATION PACKET consists of:
- An Instruction Sheet (this page)
- A Letter of Authorization Form
- Postbaccalaureate Prehealth Program Application Form*
- A written autobiographical statement including reasons for applying to the program (provided by applicant) and an updated resume
- Transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable) from all colleges or universities attended

B. APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
- Call Program Director at 732-445-4181 to schedule an interview.
- Bring your Completed Application Packet (item 2-8) and copies of transcripts to your scheduled interview.
- After your interview, if approved, the Program Director will sign the Letter of Authorization Form and return the Complete Application Packet to you.
- Submit your Completed Application Packet with the signed Letter of Authorization Form to University College Community at the address below to complete your admission process:

- Your admission into the program is complete once a letter of admission is issued, and you may register for courses.
- Make an appointment and visit the Health Professions Office (HPO) at either the Busch or Douglass location. (See HPO registration below).
C. HPO REGISTRATION: All Prehealth students are required to register and maintain a file with the Health Professions Office (HPO). The HPO provides advising and support on all aspects of the application and admission process, including maintaining files for prehealth students and a composite letter of recommendation written by the Premedical Committee.
* A copy of your Program Registration Form will be forwarded to the Health Professions Office to establish your file in the office. It is your responsibility to maintain the file, and provide all necessary documentation for the Prehealth Committee Letter. - Foreign applicants who have supporting documents which are not in English must submit certified translations.
- Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to take a Language Placement test at Rutgers University.
- Foreign applicants must have taken at least 30 credits in an institution in the U.S.
