Awards & Prizes
University College Community students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement are eligible for the following awards which are presented annually at a University College Community ceremony following the University Commencement. The Alumni Association Award is sponsored by the University College Community, New Brunswick Alumni Association and is presented to the graduating senior who has demonstrated both academic excellence and outstanding student leadership. The Edward McNall Burns Memorial Award is presented annually to the history major who graduates with the best academic record in his or her field. The cash award is sponsored by Mrs. Edward McNall Burns in memory of her husband who was professor of history and professor of political science at Rutgers University. The G. Stuart Demarest Memorial Award, established to honor a former University College Community dean who also served as professor and chairperson of the Department of English, is presented annually to the graduating English major who has demonstrated academic excellence and who, in the opinion of the department, shows promise of continuing achievement. The Douglas R. Haines Memorial Award, established by the Senior Class of 1981, is presented to the graduating senior who best exemplifies the qualities of academic excellence in the area of business studies and who also demonstrates active participation in the life of the college. The Charles Kaden Memorial Award is presented to the University College Community senior whose progress as an undergraduate in the field of psychology warrants special recognition. The Jacqueline B. Lewis Memorial Award is granted to eligible University College Community students to help support graduate study in mathematics or psychology. The award was established in memory of a former University College Community dean who had a doctorate in mathematics and was enrolled in a second Ph.D. program in psychology at the time of her death in November, 1982. The Norman C. Miller Award, named to honor the founding dean of University College Community is presented to that member of the graduating class whose academic record has evidenced the highest achievement among candidates for degree in the year under review. The James H. Street Award in Economics, established to honor a former professor of economics at Rutgers University who also served as acting dean of University College Community is presented annually to the graduating economics major who has earned at least 45 credits in University College Community, New Brunswick and who has attained the highest overall cumulative grade-point average. The Harry Wiss Memorial Award is presented to the graduating senior, majoring in accounting, economics, finance, management, or marketing, who has attained the highest cumulative grade point average. |
